At least thirteen people perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
