Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
