However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts said the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the rising price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Some content creators try to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within moments of joining one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Information and Costs

Within these groups, messages display dark colored parcels with postal service labels, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a injector should be used, sellers give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for the messaging service said it regularly moderated harmful material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
