Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story film was released, establishing Pixar as a major film company and introducing audiences to beloved characters like Woody (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys
In the teaser reveals the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, Pixar will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the insignia pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.
