In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
